At a young age I moved from Toronto to Brantford with my family and I
currently reside in Brantford with my own family (husband and son). From a
young age I knew I was part Irish which brought me into a love of Irish dance
and folk music. But when I was 16 I learned that I was part Metis. I am still
trying to develop my understanding of my background as I find the music,
traditions and religion very interesting.
I have recently started attending church which brought
me back to my childhood of religious songs I loved. My musical interests are
pretty open. I enjoy all different types of music (folk, rap, pop, hiphop,
r&b, house, rock). Although I did realize that my musical interests do
change with my mood. If I am feeling happy I listen to upbeat, happy songs
(e.g. Love Story, Despacito, galway girl). When I am sad I listen to slower,
sadder songs (e.g. behind these hazel eyes, take me away, stuttering). When I
am angry I listen to harder, faster songs (e.g. praying, bring me to life, before
he cheats).
I know that
music is something that involves beat and rhythm. Although recently because I
became a cheerleading coach I count to the beat of 8 rather than 4. It had made
transitioning a bit harder for me, but I am starting to recognize the
difference. I have realized that music is what brings the routines together.
The team used the beats and the rhythm to make a routine and the music is what
bring its all together to make it flow much more easily.
I feel very free being in the music class. I am like
an open window ready to take on the world. I want to learn how to teach music.
I also want to be open to new ideas and concepts I don’t understand so I can
bring that to my future classrooms. I also want to be free to teach different
concepts in my own way to get my students to better understand myself and to
better understand music.
I have two favorite moments with music. My first was
my cheerleading competition at wonderland. It was an amazing feeling having
people watch me enjoy the sport I love. Also, the mixes that are produced make
it so much more interesting to watch and to perform in. I hated doing things on
my own but as a team I enjoyed it. When I got married I also had an amazing
experience with music. I got to dance with my husband (and later in the song
son) to Taylor Swifts Love Story (which came out when we first started dating
11 years ago). I also got to dance with my dad (my stepfather who took the role
of my father) to piece by piece by Kelly Clarkson. They were both very
meaningful songs to me and in those moments nothing else matter but them and
me. It was an amazing experience and the music just gave me that euphoric
experience.
The only negative experience I ever had as a child was
my singing abilities. I was always too embarrassed to sing and never liked to
sing in front of anyone else. I feel that as a music teacher that might be my
downfall. I would feel awkward trying to sing in a rhythm or beat to show pitch
without feeling embarrassed to do so.
My elementary school experience was okay. We learned
to play the recorder and the boomerangs (various sizes of plastic tubing). It
was more learning about different terminology and a few basic notes to play
these basic instruments. In high school is where I learned to play the flute
which was actually very soothing and interesting to play.
I want to be a peaceful music teacher. I want to use
music to express emotions and make it an enjoyable experience for both myself
and my students. I want them to know I will always be there for them and give
them the freedom to express themselves through music by teaching them about
different pitches, timbre, rhythm and beats.
